The City of Amherst, OH is a Safe, Beautiful Cleveland Suburb
Amherst Ohio is a Cleveland suburb with about 10,000 residents, and is one of the safest and most beautiful communities in the entire northern part of the state. It is situated in Lorain County, not far from the shores of Lake Erie.
The City of Amherst OH boasts one of the lowest crime rates in northeast Ohio, and its residents are proud of the safe streets, beautiful neighborhoods and exceptional school district. The Amherst High School is home to the Comets, and the local football stadium is a favorite spot for many residents to watch games and visit with each other.
Amherst is also home to many beautiful parks, such as the Beaver Creek Reservation, where many locals go to jog, walk their dogs and play. The community itself is easily accessible by the way of State Route 90. Even for people who love the small-town feel of Amherst, it's nice to have access to the big city fun of Cleveland less than 45 minutes away.
The City of Amherst is known as "The Sandstone Capital of the World" due to the large number of sandstone quarries that flourished in the area. To this very day, many of the classical buildings in the downtown area such as the library and city hall are constructed using the local sandstone. The head official of Amherst is Dave Taylor, the elected mayor.
Other city government public servants who have been elected in Amherst are Councilman Steve Bukovac in the first ward, Amherst Councilman of the Second Ward Glenn Loughrie, Councilman Joe Gambish in the third ward (Gambish has indicated he will challenge Mayor Taylor as an Independent in the Amherst general election of 2011), Councilwoman Jennifer Wasilk in the fourth ward, Councilman At-Large Frank Janik, Councilman At-Large Phil Van Treuren, Auditor David Kukucka, Treasurer Mark Hullman, Law Director Anthony Pecora, and City Council President John Dietrich.
Other candidates for public office who will be on the ballot in 2011 include At-Large Council Candidate Joe Miller and At-Large Council Candidate Steven Mihalcik.
Downtown Amherst is home to many great pubs, restaurants and shops. The city also is host to some great yearly festivals and events, such as the Old Time Jamboree and the Dancing On Main Street gathering. The city sits adjacent to Lorain in the north and Elyria in the east, and is also very close to the historical Oberlin College to the south.
